Once, a Chinese traveller came to meet Chanakya in the evening. When the traveller entered Chanakya's room, he saw that Chanakya was busy writing something. Since there were no bulbs or tube lights in those days, he had lighted an oil lamp.  Chanakya welcomed his guest and offered him a seat. He quickly completed his work and then extinguished the oil lamp and lighted another one. The Chinese traveller thought that maybe this was a custom followed by Indians when a guest arrives at their home. Curious, he asked Chanakya if it was a custom.

Do you know what Chanakya replied? "Well, there is no such custom. Actually, I was doing an official work, pertaining to my empire, my nation. The oil filled in that lamp has been bought from the money from the National treasury. Now, I am having a personal and friendly conversation with you, which is not related to my nation. As such, I cannot use that lamp now, as it will lead to wastage of the money of the national treasury. But, this lamp contains oil that has been bought from my personal money," told Chanakya.

Always use the Triple Filter Test!!!

Truth...Good...Useful...

One day a person met the great Chanakya,  and said, "Do you know what I just heard about your friend?"

"Hold on a minute," Chanakya replied.

"Before telling me anything I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Triple Filter Test."

"Triple filter?"

"That's right," Chanakya continued.

"Before you talk to me about my friend, it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you're going to say. That's why I call it the triple filter test.
The first filter is Truth.

Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?"

"No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it and..."

"All right," said Chanakya.

"So you don't know if it's true or not.

Now let's try the second filter, the filter of Goodness.

Is what you are about to tell me about my friend something good?"

"No, on the contrary..."
 

"So," Chankaya continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him, but you're not certain it's true.

You may still pass the test though, because there's one filter left, the filter of Usefulness.

Is what you want to tell me about my friend going to be useful to me?"

"No, not really."

"Well," concluded chankaya, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?"

Ancient seat of learning – Nalanda University – reopens after 800 years

-          Seven schools planned to cater to students across the world

Nalanda is not just a university…it is a tradition, which we all have to take forward. Nalanda University is a link between the past, present and future. After almost 821 years, this ancient seat of learning, which was reduced to ruins by foreign invaders, is now open from September 1, 2014.

The university was formally inaugurated by Sushma Swaraj, external affairs minister, who opined that this move will put Bihar on the international map. The chief minister of Bihar Jitan Ram Manjhi, was also present at the occasion and planted a 'banyan' sapling on the campus site. The inaugural ceremony was also graced by the high commissioner of Singapore Lim Thuan Kuan and Thailand's ambassador Chalit Manityakul. 

 

A total of seven schools have been planned at Nalanda University. Initially, two schools- the School of Ecology and Environmental Studies and the School of Historical Studies - with 11 faculty members and 15 students, will commence its operations. These would be housed in the 455-acre proposed Nalanda University campus, just 12km from the ancient site, with a capacity to house around 7,000 people.
